Here's the final on that Star Wars piece.

Since I did step by steps it really felt like it dragged on for me but I thought I should at least post a few closing thoughts.

One I screwed up because I shouldn't have tried to do a tonal drawing with an H lead drafting pencil. It was like trying to shade with 50% of the tones not available. Next time I would definitely use a softer lead.

I did go in and do a sky at the top and plasma space around the lower half. The stuff looked pretty cool but the only way I was able to achieve a really effective space effect was with a pretty soft lead. It threw everything off and to keep it I would have basically had to go in and re-do all the darks and many of the mid tones on the characters to match the lush blacks I got with the HB lead... and that wasn't going to happen.

The original intent was just to do a nice simple Star Wars piece featuring the main characters to get my feet wet again with penciling. It's been almost 18 months since I last penciled anything (I am embarrased to say)..and I ended up adding Boba Fett and a little background as extras....so I did basically what I intended and a little more. I tried a lot of different things that didn't make the final cut...but I can always add those little things I learned to some new piece.

People had been asking about clean pencils....obviously using a harder lead is going to keep things cleaner. I used to pencil with a 4H when I first started penciling in 2004...which is crazy. It's a REALLY hard lead and is like a rock. I moved down to 2H about 2 years ago and then went down to an H lead quickly thereafter.

Now I am considering using HB. It's a little dirtier...but if I am going to do pieces like this...a softer lead is a MUST.

Thanks for coming by, and sorry if this bored the sh*t out of anyone.

Don't worry I am going to do that Batman Hellboy Steampunk piece but that art show is coming up (fast) and I need to get 2 more pieces done for that first.

A wonderfully done piece. Thanks for giving your views on the art, techniques, composition and everything you've put into this. Didn't bore me at all, Rich. You never do.

yeah sorry I promise I didn't do a bait and switch (with the Steampunk Batman Hellboy piece) because I know Star Wars was in the mix with the votes. Doing this now as a step by step was a total coincidence.

I did this for that art show because I have very specific pieces and styles I wanted to showcase there with my new work.

I already started a NEW piece I'll be sharing here that's along the lines of this Star Wars piece BUT it's even more intense (WAY more intense actually) and I am going to be inking that one.

also stay tuned for that Voodoo pin-up (in gallery here now as a work in progress) I'll be wrapping that up over the next two weeks.

Exceptional piece Richard! I love how you did the textures and details of the clothing elements and the background palace as well. Also, can never talk bad about the Fett Man.... all around this is sweet looking work!

thats some nice work man, :)

Beautifully tight and precise piece. If I may make a suggestion, though. Try using different softer leads for the darker pencil tones. There's only so dark some leads will go.

(Chewbacca still blows me away)
